Day Zero: I’m in Denver

By Marisa Richmond

Well, I’ve made it & I have survived the first full day.

I was taken to the airport this morning by my friend Mark, whose partner, Julie, usually cat sits for me.  My plane had several TN delegates including Congressman Lincoln Davis & House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh.  There were also delegates from NH & VA.  After I finally got to the TN hotel, I picked up my delegate package, which included up to date information, & lot of little gift, including a bottle of Jack Daniels.

I then met my 2 old friends, Tim & Debbie.  They drove me out to Golden to the Colorado School of Mines where Tim is a physics prof.  He & I finished out doctorates about 2 years apart at DC area universities.  We then went to Wheat Ridge to watch their youngest daughter play soccer.  Her team won 4-2.  After that, Tim dropped Debbie & me at the Convention Center for the Friends of New Orleans Welcome party.  The music was fabulous with several N.O. musicians, with Randy Newman & Marcia Ball being the 2 biggest names.  The noteworthy speakers were Majority Whip Jim Clyburn of South Carolina, & Dr. Howard Dean, DNC Chairman.  We tried to get photos with Nancy Pelosi when she arrived, but she was totlly surrounded by security & others clamoring to get near her.

From there, I went to a reception co-hosted by the Matthew Shepard Foundation & National Stonewall Democrats.  Vanessa Foster of Houston & I were the only transgender delegates there, but there were several other transgender activists present including Mara Keisling (NCTE), Lisa Mottet (NGLTF), Alex Darsinos (Transgender Law Center), & Dr. Dana Beyer of Maryland.

It’s been a long day, but things are now underway.  It begins tomorrow at 7:30 w/the TN breakfast sponsored by AT&T, and continues from there.

I am so tired….

sunday night recap

The excitement is building all over town. I have to say the police presence is quite high. Tonight we saw several of them searching flowerpots with flashlights up and down the pedestrian mall. Tom Haden addressed this very issue tonight at the PDA welcoming event.

He said they recieved 50 million dollars from homeland security and it’s obvious they are very well equiped and staffed. Is all this really needed? Did I ever think I would see this armed presence in America? No. Such a military state we have become.

The PDA session was inspiring.

Mimi Kennedy, Jim Hightower, Tom and others covered so many of the issues we are facing.

They reminded us of the work we must ALL do to bring real change to this country. To make it a place of peace, of equality for everyone, something we can all be proud of and feel a part of.

I had some technical problems with the audio but hopefully I got enough of it to share some of the message with all of you. Patiance is appreciated as I have much editing to do before I can upload. I go home (away from home) to try.

Emily flys home in the morning. I will miss her. History is being made this week and I am honored to be a tiny grain of sand in the midst of it all. I hope you enjoy my posts. I’ll leave you with a little visual from something Tom Hayden said tonight…

Your looking at a video of Obama’s two little girls outside in the grass. The camera slowly zooms out to reveal the White House lawn. Picture that America.

Sitting on a bench in 16th Street Mall

Well I decided I don’t need to sleep anymore until I get back home…just kidding…I think. Today Emily and I parked the rental car and took Denver’s RTD bus into the city. Much better choice with the traffic, lack of parking and crowds. We drove past the MSNBC stage where all the shows are broadcasted from here. I’d like to go by when Keith Obberman is recording his. Maybe Rachel Maddow can stop by before her new show starts in September. That would be a treat.

Our first stop was to visit the Green Frontier Festival and talk to some people about solar powered water purification systems, a solar house on display & other alternative energy booths. I talked Emily into interviewing while I shot some stuff for youtube about it. She’s studied all of it and knows what to ask. Look for them on my youtube page soon.

We were waiting for the Mall Shuttle and I saw two lone characters walking slowly up the sidewalk with a McCain sign. To each his own I guess. I know I would fight for his right to free speech but I wonder if he would fight for mine. Maybe there lies the difference. I will say over all, the people in Denver seem very friendly and helpful.

We wondered over to the BIG TENT at 3p and picked up my credentials and a wonderful little goody bag of gifts. Thanks guys. I’m sitting at starbucks at the moment going over everything with Emily and it’s nicer stuff than any conference either of us have been to.

Press Update at the BIG TENT

Emily ran into this guy that was selling a deck of cards with gay closeted politicians that vote against GLBT FOLKS and then get caught walking on the wild side themselves. How I hate the hypocrisy. Look for my interview about it on my you tube page in a day or so.

Tonight is a panel discussion sponsored by The Nation Magazine and Progressive Democrats of America. Here’s some info about what’s happening there all week:
“…dialogue about the future of progressive politics–in the party and nationally–will be at its most adventurous and exciting at Progressive Central in the Central Presbyterian Church located at 1660 Sherman St. in downtown Denver.

Members of Congress, delegates, alternates and activists–including Congressional Progressive Caucus co-chairs Barbara Lee and Lynn Woolsey, House Judiciary Committee chair John Conyers, environmental campaigner Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Global Exchange founder Medea Benjamin and dozens of others–will speak, debate, listen, learn and plot strategies for the future of progressive politics in America. “

Please check out Marisa Richmond’s blog posts from the convention floor. She’s flying in today so she’ll be giving us an inside look at things in the Pepsi Center. Cheers from Denver everybody! What a week ahead…

Balloons, Horses & Vice Presidential Picks

Saturday in Colorado…
We took a drive before sunrise this morning to Chatfield State Park to watch balloons lift off at dawn.

It was the 2008 Rocky Mountain Balloon Festival.

My sister & her husband and Emily & I were elbowing up to the coffee cups at 4:00am. this morning.

When I woke up, I had a text message on my cell phone from who else but the Obama team…seems he’s picked his V.P. I like ya Joe. You’re the real deal. Now go out there and say everything Obama can’t say about that pasty old white guy please. You know the one…the guy with so many houses he forgets how many he has…that one…Go get him Joe! Show your stuff.

Now, for Hillary…Please offer her a position where she can do the most good. How about Healthcare? She has a few really good ideas on that I think. Or how about Supreme Court Justice? She’s an attorney…anyway, pick something really good for her would you please?

Anyway, I have a video camera that shoots in HD but I have always shot in standard. It’s a sony fx1 for any geeks out there that know your cameras. This morning’s colorful airborne (for the most part) spectacle was the perfect opportunity to try out the high resolution setting. I’ll put some footage up on youtube when we get back to the house. Maybe it will look clearer than my other videos up there.

After watching the balloons lift off and then having a really tasty breakfast at a place called the Egg & I, we went back to Chatfield State Park to join the Denver Carriage Club for a little buggy riding.

My sister is into ponies and came in second last year at the Shetland Pony Congress.

It was actually my first time riding shotgun in a 4 wheeler cart but it was great. The driver was an old pro and the horse was a beautiful mare hackney/clydesdale cross named after Princess Margaret.

So now as I write this we’re heading back to my sister’s to rest up, get cleaned up and go out on the town tonight. The GLBT Unity Dance and cocktail party is tonight at Tracks in Denver. Look for my podcast from there tomorrow. Here’s more about that…

The Denver GLBT community will be hosting a massive welcome party for the 2008 Democratic Convention on Saturday, Aug. 23 at Tracks/EXDO Events Center. Unity Dance 08 will connect the men’s and women’s community along with local and national GLBT organizations for a single, unprecedented DNC host city party.

Babes Around Denver (BAD) and Tracks/EXDO have collaborated with the Human Rights Campaign, Stonewall Democrats, NGLTF, The Center, Outfront Magazine, Boulder Pride, ATL Foundation, Hip Chicks Out, Cafe Vivid, Colorado AIDS Project, Project Angel Heart, Matthew Shepherd Foundation and others to bring you this event.

Unity Dance 08 will be a party—not a political event—so, no speeches or partisanship, just fun! Doors will open early and close late with music and entertainment by legendary DJ’s Manny Lehman and Lydia Prim along with resident First Friday DJ Trina J.

All GLBT and straight allies are welcome – and don’t miss the VIP (open to all) opening welcome reception from 7pm-9pm, with a great buffet for only $10 more!

Visit http://www.babesaroundenver.com or contact dedefrain@babesaroundenver.com for specific cover ($10 – $25) and more information.
