Show Notes: On this show I sat down with Kimmie Satin before a Nashville Drag Show. A former Miss Tennessee and with 25 years on the Drag Show circuit, Kimmie shares tips, political thoughts and stories from the stage. We covered topics from family and community to Gay Pride and Stonewall.

Also, Tennessee Equality Project held a reception at The Tribe the night before Equality Day on the Hill. Emily and I attended both events and I spoke with several folks there.

Music on the show is a brand new song from Jill Sissell with The Paint Sisters!

Peace and Love,
Val

SEX ED BILL ON 4th ANNUAL ADVANCING EQUALITY DAY ON THE HILL

***Action Alert***

We have just learned that one of the major bills that the Tennessee Transgender Political Coalition is opposing this year is on a subcommittee calendar next week..

The House K-12 Subcommittee has placed HB2997 on the calendar for Tuesday, February 19. The House K-12 Subcommittee meets 10:30 to Noon in Legislative Plaza Room 30.. The bill would prevent teachers from discussing any sexual orientation other than heterosexuality. This bill limits academic freedom and intellectual curiosity. It is Item #30 on the calendar, so there is a chance they may not get to it.

The sponsor of this bill, Rep. Stacey Campfield (R-Knoxville) has made it clear in a recent interview with the Memphis Commercial Appeal that he wants to silence teachers in Tennessee from discussing all gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender issues.

The members of the K-12 subcommittee are:

Joe Towns,(D-Memphis), Chair
Richard Montgomery, (R-Sevierville), Vice Chair
Tommie Brown, (D-Chattanooga)
Harry Brooks, (R-Knoxville)
Beth Harwell, (R-Nashville)
Ulysses Jones, (D-Memphis)
Mark Maddox, (D-Dresden)
Gerald McCormick, (R-Chattanooga)
Larry Turner, (D-Memphis)
Les Winnngham, (D-Huntsville)

If you live in their district, contact them immediately and tell them to vote NO on HB2997.

Of course, Tuesday, February 19 just happens to be Advancing Equality Day on the Hill. Please join members of the Tennessee Transgender Political Coalition (TTPC) as we support the Tennessee Equality Project (TEP) in the 4th Annual Advancing Equality Day On The Hill, a day in which members of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender community and allies meet with State Legislators in Nashville to express our views on proposed legislation affecting the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Community.
