Welcome to the 21st Century

What a day in America today has been. The fact that we can have a change of power every 4 or 8 years without violence, without a military coup. This one was especially amazing to watch. The past 8 years have been so hard. I watched until Bush’s helicopter finally disappeared from view and then I exhaled. I held my breath again when the new first couple got out of the limo on the parade route. I felt afraid for them. I know both good and bad exist in this world. I want him to just be in a big protective bubble and help turn things around from there. Really?…I just want him to get to work.

I wanted to remind you to check out the updated http://www.whitehouse.gov

I went there tonight and it’s brand new. Here’s a link to the before and after website:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/fimoculous/3213257378/sizes/o/There’s a blog and everything. Stay up to date on what’s happening and what is on the agenda in this new era of change. It took 9 years to really get us into the 21st century… for us to actually BE in the 21st century but “AT LAST” we are here. (That one’s for you Etta) So…Dance the night away and then get ready because whatever ride we are on? It has begun.
Peace & Love,
Val

A few photos around town

Today at CES we are in search of TV’s. There’s a new one out I want to check out that’s called OLED. before this show Sony’s 11″ screen oled cost over $2500. I’m anxious to find out more about it and when the price will drop so it can come out in Larger screen sizes. I hear it is gorgeous to look at. The O stands for organic but that’s all I know so far.

I remember buying one of the first Sony trinatron TV’s back in the early 80’s. The resolution at the time was so great that I even found myself watching game shows and the PTL club. I didn’t care what they said and sometimes forgot to turn the sound on. I was just blown away by how clear the picture was. It just keeps getting better and better.

We’re heading over to the convention in a few hours but in the meantime here’s a few vegas shots for ya…

Here’s what a Million Dollars looks like kids…
I like David Letterman’s question about our current economic times…He said we have all lost our money…but where did it go? Everywhere you look we’ve lost it and it just went away…his answer: “I think China’s got it all.” I think he maybe half right anyway. Cheney took the rest to Dubai…Betcha a million bucks that’s true.

Gay Marriage Bans Succeeding

While we rejoice in the promise that a new President Obama will bring, there are some of us in America who amidst the celebration have endured a punch in the gut this election night. Our quest for equality is not over and once more the people have spoken against us.

If the civil right bill had been decided by the general public it never would have passed. President Lyndon Johnson signed it. We need that same protection from our new president. I don’t know how that could happen but I believe it CAN happen…in our lifetime. Change in America has come. I hope the tide of change flows far enough for GLBT Americans too. None of us are free unless we ALL are free.-Val

here’s the story…
State amendments to ban gay marriage did well across the country with voters in Arizona and Florida approving proposals to outlaw same-sex marriage and Californians on the verge of passing such an amendment in their state.

Debate night at Obama Headquarters in Nashville

Bridges Academy provided The food and it looks great & I’m hungry. (lots of pasta dishes) but the food line is really long and looks a bit overwhelming so I will sit here and start blogging. I’ll eat later tonight when Emily gets here.

In the back of the room are people on cellphones calling voters. This room has been busy every time I’ve been down here. They can always use more help though and if you want to come down and give it a whirl they’ll even give you a script (you don’t need to know what to say) I hope you know by now that it takes all of us to bring about the change we so desperately need. Did you see the DOW today? Down over 500 points. Damn! How low do you think it will go? We all must do more than just vote.

Stacy Beyer is about to sing….

She just sang her song YES WE CAN! She also handed out copies of the song on cd.

This another singer…Keith Floyd

The DJ, Robert Luke is playing music at the moment and I can tell he really really likes his job. I really really like the music choices. Toe tappin’ going on here. Like the hat too…one of his other jobs tonight is to try and quiet the crowd during the debate so we could hear everything. This is not always an easy job. “Ok folks…settle down…”

I can’t overstate the excitement in the room. People came tonight to watch history but I think we all could feel a sense that we are part of it too. The momentum of Obama’s campaign is so inspiring. We have really been through it all these last 8 years. People are fed up. I’m not so sure Tennessee is going to be a “red” state in November. I hope everyone takes advantage of early voting October 15th – 30th because on November 4th I think the polls are going to be very very long lines.

Nick Wells, state field director for Obama’s Tennessee campaign said that if the election were to be tonight not only would Obama win, he would pick up 8 “red states’ that went to Bush in 2000 & 2004.

Needless to say, his “good news” went over pretty well…

Ms. Thompson (I think her name is Felisha) sorry I didn’t get that…she is introducing folks and keeping things rolling along befor the debate. I have been here from 6p on and they have had music & speakers right up to debate time.

later….

Everyone took their seats as it was almost 8pm. The big screen up front was turned on and the lights dimmed. For me it was a matter of one more formality before Obama is sworn in. My mind is made up and has been for a long time. So is just about everyone I know. I turn on the TV and all I hear about is undecided voters. I can’t think of any that I know. I’m a decided voter. I’ve decided I want Obama to be the next President for one simple reason. He’s the most qualified.
