house bill 0905 status update

This is the tennessee bill requiring GLBT teens (and it is targeted at them) to get parents permission to join a gay teen club at school…

On Wednesday, March 21, the House Education Committee postponed action on
HB0905 by Representative Matthew Hill (R-Jonesborough) until Wednesday, April 11.

House Bill 0905 would require signed parental notification for student
participation in school-sponsored clubs.

The Tennessee Transgender Political Coalition, along with the American Civil
Liberties Union and the Tennessee Equality Project, believes this bill would
have the effect of destroying Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) in public schools.
GSAs provide a safe space and peer support for gay, lesbian, transgender, and
bisexual students and their straight friends, while promoting self-respect
and tolerance, and stand against GLBT bullying and harassment. Several schools
across Tennessee already have GSA’s and they are providing an important
service for GLBT youth in the state.

What can you do?

We need to get in contact with representatives from Gay-Straight Alliances in
public schools across Tennessee. If you have any contacts with any GSA in
your community, please have them contact us immediately. It is important that
members of the House Education Committee hear directly from the people who will
be affected by this legislation.
