After a few 30-minute forays down to the creek or up the hill to the dump truck, we went on our first “official” trail ride this past Saturday. Elizabeth came with us, on Contessa. We rode for a little over an hour (and yes, I was in a saddle).
Journey was nearly PERFECT! She had power-steering, her brakes were good, and she was alert but not anxious. She took everything in stride and we had a great time.
The most amazing thing about the ride was how Contessa behaved. She is normally very spooky and “hot”, but that day she was positively calm. She seemed to know that she was the “old hand” and that she needed to be relaxed so Journey would be, too.
Journey and I have since been out by ourselves a couple of times, for 30 minutes or so, and things haven’t gone quite so smoothly. She stops a lot, and it’s very difficult to get her started again. We have more work to do, but she gets less “green” every day. It’s been a fun, educational year.

SOMEONE E-MAILED ME THIS PERFORMANCE BY STACY AND I SAT HERE AND WATCHED WITH AMAZEMENT. I CAME HOME AND WATCHED IT ON MY LUNCH HOUR AND CRIED LIKE A BABY. I’VE NEVER BEEN A HORSE PERSON, BUT I LOVE ALL ANIMALS, AND THIS ANIMAL (AND RIDER!) WERE SPECTACULAR. A VERY MOVING PERFORMANCE. THANK YOU!
